Do Slimming Wu Long Tea Really Work

Do Slimming Wu Long Tea Really Work ?

Various Research has been conducted in both China and Japan with regards to the effectiveness of using Wu Long Tea to control Obesity.

What i found from the internet :

From www.oolongtea.org, it states that the presence of Polyphenol in Wu Long Tea is effective in controlling obesity by activating the enzyme that is responsible for dissolving triglyceride (sugar and fat are synthesized into triglyceride in the liver and the small intestine when we consume food). From its clinical tests, it was confirmed that the continuous intake of Wu Long Tea promotes the function of fat metabolism and contributes to controlling obesity.

From DRAGONWATER TEA BLOG, according to a research conducted by the Japanese medical field, it was concluded that the level of polymerized poly-phenols was found to be higher in Wu Long tea when compared to green tea and that is loosely associated with the weight loss results found by the researchers. Wu Long Tea appeared to increase energy expenditure by 10%, Green Tea by 4% while water 0%. This means that you burn more fat when you drink Wu Long or Green tea after a meal. See reference for more details :

"Oolong tea increases energy metabolism in Japanese females", The Journal of Investigative Medicine, p170, Tatsushi Komatsu, Masayo Nakamori, Keiko Komatsu, Kazuaki Hosoda, Mariko Okamura, Kenji Toyama, Yoshiyuki Ishikura, Tohru Sakai, Daisuke Kunii and Shigeru Yamamoto

From my own personal experience as well as from friends drinking Wu Long Tea, I found that some friends were able to achieve weight control through regular drinking of Wu Long Tea especially after heavy meals. But there are also others that have no effects on them. For myself, I am not fat and i love to drink Wu Long Tea. I am not getting any fatter too with my usual diet of oily stuff and fast food.

So, my conclusion is that Wu Long Tea may helps some people in achieving weight control. But it will depend on other factors too. There is NO 100% guarantees. If you find those merchant trying to sell you Wu Long Tea with 100% guarantee. Dump them. There is no truth in it. To know the answer, you got to buy one yourself to try it yourself. But remember to buy those without any additional additives other than natural Wu Long Tea leaves. So Slimming tea has extra chemicals or additives that are known to cause some side effects. So Remember to buy with care. I usually shop for my tea online at only NaturaWorks.com (a Singapore firm that is known for their quality tea) and TeafromTaiwan.com (Famous for their Taiwan Tea)
Anyway there is no harm in trying Wu Long Tea (Just be careful whom you buy from) as it is after all a healthy drink with a long history in China. I just love it.

For All those looking for more scientific proof/research on slimming from drinking tea. There is one research report which i found recently in the internet.

You can download the full pdf research article here :
http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/jos/50/9/50_717/_article

Abstract: The body fat reducing effect of tea catechins was previously confirmed in humans. The effects of tea catechins for reducing body fat were thus studied as basis for actual application. Three experiments on healthy male adults (n=82) were conducted to determine the effects of long-term tea catechins administration on body fat and biochemical blood parameters. First experiment: tea catechins were given as oolong tea-like beverage for 12 weeks. In 600 and 900 mg groups, visceral fat was significantly loss than in the control (600 mg group p=0.0317, 900 mg group p=0.0098). The effects were more pronounced at greater of tea catechins administration. No significant changes in biochemical blood parameters including fat-soluble vitamins were detected. Second experiment : oolong tea-like beverage containing tea catechins at nearly same amounts on in the 600 mg group was given for 20 weeks. Abdominal fat, including visceral fat, was significantly loss than in the control (total fat area p<0.0001, visceral fat area p=0.0004, subcutaneous fat area p=0.0001). Plasma PAI-1 was also significantly decreased (p=0.0080). Third experiment : green tea-like (GT group) and oolong tea-like (OT group) beverages containing approximately 540 mg tea catechins were given for 12 weeks. In the two groups, visceral fat was significantly loss than in the control (GT group p=0.0284, OT group p=0.0095) and the effects of two beverages were similar. Long-term tea catechins administration at 500 to 600 mg/day in humans would thus appear to reduce body fat without influencing fat-soluble vitamins, of which the absorption may be inhibited, and various serum and plasma indices regardless of the kind of beverages.

** My Comments : I believe there is a link between slimming and drinking tea regularly (not just oolong/wu long tea). But, the slimming effects on people normally varies from nothing to significant weigh reduction - So nothing is definite.

Hi Sam

First of all, I hope you understand that although there are research reports on the slimming effects of wulong tea, i have seen many others hat have no such effects on them. There are a few that are successful. I am sure diet, exercise and individual body condition do play apart on this.

I would rather you try drinking wulong tea as a hobby just like English Tea Party as a culture. For beginner, you can try the cheap wulong tea (lower grade)from NaturaWorks will do (pls check if they deliver to UK). After trying, if you like the taste, you may then explore the higher grades of wulong tea in the market as each have their unique taste and favour - you should be able to find one that suits your taste. There is no such thing higher grade wulong will have better slimming effects as they are still the same just different taste and favour. My favourites are Wuyi Cliff Tea (Thicker Tea) and Tie Guan Yin (light tea with great fragance and after taste effect at the throat)

The added bonus is after consuming it for sometime, it may have slimming effects but i would rather you treat this as a last factor when you decides to drink wulong tea. Chinese tea in general like wulong tea, green tea are beneficial to human (read the tons of such research info in the internet). You can't go wrong sticking to it compared to coffee.

Hope this helps and remember not to pay for those expensive wulong slimming tea. wulong tea is the same as long as they undergo the same fermentation processes.
